A neighbor of mine tried to walk into Grace Farms on a bright Saturday in September last year. No ticket in hand, because why would you need one. Admission is free. She got turned away at the gate. Not because of a special event, just because the day's online slots were already full by early afternoon.
That's the part about Grace Farms that doesn't show up in the postcard version of the place. The 80 acres, the SANAA-designed River building, the free admission. All true. What's also true is that "free" and "walk in whenever" are not the same thing here, and this fall the calendar is stacked enough that the difference is worth knowing before you plan a Saturday around it.
Two Ways In, Two Sets of Rules
General admission, meaning the trails, the River building, the Library, and the Commons café, runs on a timed online reservation through gracefarms.org. It costs nothing. It also isn't unlimited. Grace Farms is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., closed Mondays, and closed the full week of Labor Day this year, Tuesday September 1 through Friday September 4. Weekend slots go first.
Concerts in the Sanctuary, the glass-enclosed hall that anchors the River building, run on a different system entirely. Those are ticketed and sold directly through gracefarms.org. The organization is specific about this in its own event listings, stating plainly that it does not authorize the sale or resale of tickets through any third-party site, and that tickets bought elsewhere risk being refused at the door. It's the kind of operational detail that only shows up if you've actually tried to buy a ticket, not if you've just read the brochure.

One Reason to Go Before the Benches Move
Last October, for the foundation's tenth anniversary, architect Kazuyo Sejima designed six wooden benches for the entrance plaza, each shaped like a figure caught mid-dance. Grace Farms has said the plan is to relocate them along the trail network after about a year, meaning this stretch of 2026 may be the last chance to see all six together at the front door before they scatter across the property.
They're not the only new work on the grounds. Alicja Kwade's sculpture, the foundation's first permanent piece by the artist, was unveiled the same October weekend. Both join a collection of site-specific work that's been accumulating since the River building opened in 2015, including pieces by Thomas Demand, Olafur Eliasson, and Beatriz Milhazes, plus Teresita Fernández's Double Glass River, installed the year the building opened and still part of the permanent grounds.
What's Actually on the Calendar This Month and Next
Closest on the horizon is Summer Discovery Week, running August 18 through 21, with hands-on family activities built around the River building and the habitat around it. Registration is free and separate from a standard visit.
After the Labor Day closure, the fall season opens with three programs worth knowing by name rather than category. On Sunday, September 13, Teresita Fernández returns for a season-opening conversation about her own studio practice and about Double Glass River, the installation she made for the site. On Saturday, September 19, Sarah Harden, the former CEO of Hello Sunshine, speaks about moving between sports, media, and technology leadership roles. On Saturday, September 26, Tony and Grammy winner Leslie Odom Jr. performs.

Prince said that as Grace Farms opened a season that ultimately ran from September 2025 through May 2026, one the Sentinel and Patch both covered in detail, with names like Yo-Yo Ma and Joshua Bell filling the Sanctuary earlier this year. The three September programs mark the start of whatever comes next, and if the last several years are any guide, more names will fill in as fall goes on.
The Free Side Nobody Books Fast Enough
While the concert calendar draws the headlines, the free half of Grace Farms tends to get overlooked by people who already live five minutes away. The property holds three ponds, a restored meadow, and marked trails through habitat that supports more than 40 bird species. None of that requires a ticket, only the same reservation you'd use for any other visit.
Fall has historically brought a guided Fall Foliage Tour, co-led by Mark Fowler, the foundation's Nature Initiative Director, and Aaron Lefland, Executive Director of the New Canaan Land Trust. That pairing says something about how the town's institutions work together. A private cultural foundation and the town's land trust running a joint program on the same acreage isn't a given in most towns this size, and it means the tour tends to cover both what's growing on the property and how it fits into conservation work happening elsewhere in town. Grace Farms hasn't posted this year's exact dates as of this writing, but the tour has run multiple times across October in recent seasons, so check the events calendar as the month gets closer rather than assuming a single date.
Beyond the trails, the Library holds a curated book collection with views across the grounds, the Court offers open gym space that's become a regular stop for families with young kids, and the Commons café serves casual food with a health-forward bent. All three are covered under the same free general admission reservation.
